The Brain Injury Clinic is an outpatient multidisciplinary program for persons
17 years and older with mild to moderate brain injuries or non-progressive
brain illnesses. Some of the problems people with mild brain injuries have:
memory
concentration
communication
organization
Those who respond best to our program are usually:
two to three months post-injury
independent in self-care activities
able to participate in therapies without supervision
live within a comfortable commute to our site (due to therapy schedule)
A major focus of the Brain Injury Clinic is helping people with their work
and employment situation. We work closely with vocational
services on evaluation, counseling, and placement.
Initial evaluation includes:
a comprehensive review of your records
a diagnostic assessment interview by a clinical psychologist
A treatment plan is then developed based on individual needs. Therapies are typically
given two to three days a week, lasting two to three hours per day. Most participants
are in the program two to four months.
A treatment plan may include the following:
Neuropsychology studies the relationship between the brain and behavior.
A clinical neuropsychologist provides assessment of a person's neuropsychological
status. They provide clinical supervision to the treatment team. They also
provide education to the participant and their family regarding their injury.
Case coordination services include program planning and coordination,
periodic reviews of progress with the participant and their treatment team,
correspondence and liaison with all involved professionals. Case coordination
services also provides follow up with the participant after active programming
is complete for support and additional intervention if needed.
Occupational therapy provides instruction of compensatory systems
to circumvent attention, memory and organizational problems. Therapy also
involves applying systems in personal, home, and work environments according
to special requirements of each person and their situation.
Speech language pathology provides evaluation and treatment to improve
deficits in communication skills. This may include verbal expression, auditory
comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression.
Psychological adjustment counseling works with the participant to
achieve awareness, acceptance and adjustment to cognitive, behavioral and
emotional problems resulting from brain injury. Marital or family therapy
may also be prescribed when stress occurs with the family.
The Brain Injury Clinic often works closely with other rehabilitation services
to address physical concerns.
