Patty Peterson Concert to Benefit the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation at Abbott Northwestern Hospital

MINNEAPOLIS 07/09/2007--Jazz singer Patty Peterson will take center stage at the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 29 to raise money for the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation.

The concert is Peterson’s first since suffering an acute aortic dissection--a sudden and life-threatening condition--and undergoing emergency heart surgery at Abbott Northwestern earlier this year.

Peterson will be joined on stage by The Peterson Family , which will include Patty's mother Jeanne Arland Peterson, her sister Linda Peterson, her nephew Jason Peterson DeLaire, her son Isaac Johnson and her cousins Tom Peterson and Russ Peterson. In addition, THE GIRLS and Patty's new Smooth Jazz Group will perform.

Tickets range in price from $20 to $29 and are available by calling Ticketmaster at 612-673-0404 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com. Minnesota Public Radio members can receive a discount on tickets by purchasing them through the Fitzgerald Box Office at 651-290-1221 or visiting www.fitzgeraldtheater.org. A $2.50 facility fee will be charged for each ticket purchased.

Peterson is donating all of the proceeds from the concert to the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation at Abbott Northwestern Hospital as her way of thanking the medical team that diagnosed and treated her aortic dissection.

She suffered an aortic dissection while she was driving home from a rehearsal in February. An aortic dissection is a tear in the wall of the aorta, the large blood vessel that leaves the heart and distributes blood to the rest of the body. After calling 911, she was brought to Abbott Northwestern, where a medical team including emergency department personnel, cardiologists, radiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and others swooped into action to quickly diagnose and treat her condition.

According to Kevin Harris, MD, a cardiologist and medical director of the Minneapolis Heart Institute’s Ascending Aortic Dissection Program, delays in diagnosing a dissection can be catastrophic for patients; the mortality rate for people with torn aortas is 1 to 2 percent for each hour they go without surgery. Each year, 25,000 Americans die from the condition.

Patients generally present with severe chest or back pain. Patients with high blood pressure, known aortic aneurysms and bicuspid valves are at risk. The Minneapolis Heart Institute is unique in being one of just a few places in the country in having a systematic approach to aortic dissection. “We really have a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to this condition. All the specialists involved have worked together with the same goal: improving the care of our patients” said Harris.

The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation at Abbott Northwestern Hospital is a leader in the effort to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease, including cardiac emergencies such as aortic dissection. The foundation helps people of every age lead healthier lives through scientific innovation in research and effective educational offerings.
