Buffalo Hospital named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals, earns elite Everest Award

BUFFALO, MN 03/29/2010--Buffalo Hospital today was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. In addition, Buffalo Hospital is one of 23 hospitals among the 100 winners to be recognized as an Everest Award winner for the greatest rate of improvement over a five-year period.

The 100 Top Hospital award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and operational efficiency. Only four Minnesota hospitals, including Buffalo Hospital, made the 100 Top Hospitals list.

"Our commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety is driven by our mission to provide exceptional care to those in our community," says Jennifer Nelson, Buffalo Hospital president. "We are honored to be recognized as a quality leader."

Winners were identified through an in-depth analysis, the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks study. The study evaluated 3,000 non-federal hospitals in 10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, cash-to-debt ratio, patient satisfaction, and adherence to clinical standards of care and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia.

"It is in incredible honor to be named among the nation's best hospitals for an award that encompasses so much," said Buffalo Hospital Board of Trustees chair Nate Allen. "It is a true testament of the level of dedication, passion and personal accountability exhibited by every person who works or volunteers at Buffalo Hospital."

"The boards, executives and physician leaders and staff at the Everest award-winning hospitals developed long-term strategies and executed them with extraordinary skill to produce extraordinary results," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters. "The Everest award winners are leaders and innovators and they are bringing great value to their communities."

"This honor validates Buffalo Hospital's ongoing efforts to create a culture of safety and establishes Buffalo Hospital as a national leader in health outcomes and patient safety," says Gretchen Frederick, RN, Buffalo Hospital's chief nursing officer.

If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in these 100 Top Hospitals award winners:

  • More than 98,000 additional patients would survive each year.
  • More than 197,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
  • Expenses would decline by an aggregate $5.5 billion a year.
  • The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.
